Spirit of the Game uses star ratings to create behaviour points. The points reward positive conduct and help identify poor or repeated unsporting behaviour.
| Rating | Normal points | If repeated next round |
|---|---|---|
| 5 stars — Excellent | 9 points | 10 points |
| 4 stars — Good | 7 points | 8 points |
| 3 stars — Satisfactory | 5 points | 6 points |
| 2 stars — Poor | 4 points | 3 points |
| 1 star — Bad | 2 points | 1 point |
A team also receives a weekly 2 point bonus when it logs in and submits its Spirit of the Game results.
Where two umpires submit ratings, the umpire score is based on the average of the two umpire ratings.
Example: if Umpire 1 rates a team 4 stars worth 7 points, and Umpire 2 rates the same team 3 stars worth 5 points, the umpire average is 6 points.
Clubs are expected to rate their own behaviour honestly. To prevent a team from rating itself far higher than the umpires rated it, the system compares the team’s self-rating with the umpire rating.
If a team rates itself 5 points or more above the umpire score, that self-rating is removed and becomes a 1 point penalty score.
Example: the umpire average for your team is 4 points, but your team rates itself 9 points. The difference is 5 points. Because the self-rating is too far above the umpire rating, your team’s self-rating becomes 1 point.
Clubs are also expected to rate the opposition fairly. To prevent a team from unfairly marking down an opponent, the system compares the club’s opposition rating with the umpire rating.
If a team rates its opponent 5 points or more below the umpire rating, that opposition rating is cancelled and replaced with the umpire rating.
Example: the umpire rates the opposition at 7 points, but your team rates them at 2 points. The difference is 5 points. The low opposition rating is cancelled and replaced with the umpire score of 7 points.
The system is designed to be fair. Teams can give their view, but the umpire rating acts as a check against exaggerated self-ratings or unfair opposition ratings.
